If you’ve ever found yourself in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen with a backpack full of cans searching for a legal spot, there is finally good news: Terneuzen has its first official legal wall. And it is more than just a concrete wall – it is a canvas that lives, breathes, and changes.
The spot: at the back of the old library
The wall is located at the back of the former library on the Oostkolk. Easily accessible from several parts of the city, and – perhaps even more importantly – it is municipal property. So, no hassle with landlords or law enforcement.
Alderman Jeroen de Buck was given the honor of symbolically opening it and even tried putting up a piece himself:
“It’s a good thing there are courses available,” he joked while drawing his first lines.
The wall didn't just appear out of nowhere. The catalyst was the mysterious crocodiles popping up in various places across Zeeuws-Vlaanderen – illegal graffiti that the municipality would rather see in safe, regulated areas. Instead of repression, Terneuzen chose creativity.
More than a wall: workshops & community
The art institution Toonbeeld immediately saw opportunities and is now organizing graffiti workshops at the wall. From design to execution: people learn here that spraying is about more than just quickly throwing up a tag.
According to Olga Knetsch from Toonbeeld, it is also the ideal place for beginners:
“You notice that people really want to try it out when it’s actually allowed.”
And that is exactly the power of such a location. It’s not a place for quick tags and throw-ups, but a space where experience and experimentation coexist. Something is there today; tomorrow it’s something else entirely. A living artwork, in the words of Knetsch.
Respect the wall
Of course, with freedom comes ground rules. You can find these on the sign next to the wall. Briefly summarized:
-
No offensive texts or symbols
-
Respect each other's work
-
Clean up your mess
The municipality is keeping an eye on things, but the vibe must come from the community itself. If it remains respectful, De Buck does not rule out the possibility of more legal walls appearing in other parts of Terneuzen in the future.
Practical: how to get there?
Location: Back of former library, Oostkolk, Terneuzen
Part of: the "Verbeeldingsroute" (Imagination Route)
Essentials: Bring your own gear + leave it clean
Finally: leave your mark
The legal wall is open. Now it's your turn. Whether you're an experienced writer or holding a spray can for the first time – this is your space to experiment, go all out, or find your flow.
Leave your work. Take a photo.
Tag @Cantastic.nl, and we’ll share your piece.
