When you talk about Dutch graffiti culture, you can’t ignore Eindhoven. And when you say Eindhoven, you say the Berenkuil. What was once a grey and confusing traffic junction has, over the years, grown into the absolute Hall of Fame for street art and graffiti in our country. It’s a place where legends were born, styles were developed, and the paint on the walls is literally inches thick. For us, the Berenkuil is more than just a legal spot; it’s the ultimate place where creativity and technique come together.
From concrete to open-air gallery
The Berenkuil, officially Insulindeplein, was constructed in 1973 to safely guide slow traffic underneath the roaring cars above. For years, it was a cold, grey arena. The real revolution came in 1997, when Eindhoven-based Sol Crew, together with activist group Loesje, successfully lobbied the municipality for a legal place to paint. From that moment on, the Berenkuil transformed into a massive, three-dimensional canvas. Today, it is the largest legal graffiti spot in the Netherlands, where the walls never stay the same for long.
The legacy of Step in the Arena
For years, the Berenkuil served as the proud stage for Step in the Arena, one of the most influential street art festivals in Europe. With around 150 international and national artists per edition, the festival brought the global scene to North Brabant. Although that era came to an end after the fourteenth edition in 2023, the spirit of the place hasn’t faded for a second. The Berenkuil still breathes paint and remains the hotspot for beginners putting down their first outlines, as well as pros creating insane murals.
Style Warz: The ultimate battle in the Kuil
To amplify that raw, unfiltered energy of the Berenkuil, we’re taking over the spot on Saturday, April 11 with the second edition of Style Warz! In collaboration with Dynamo Eindhoven and Kobra Paint, we’re organizing an event that’s anything but a standard graffiti jam. This is a true confrontation of styles. Writers will go head-to-head live on the wall, with creativity, flow, and skills taking center stage. Street culture in full effect, and you can witness it up close as every last drop gets pushed out of each Kobra can.
Ready to put up your own piece?
The Berenkuil proves that graffiti is a living art form. Nothing is permanent, and that constant renewal is exactly what makes it so dope. Feeling inspired after seeing the action during Style Warz and want to upgrade the walls of the Berenkuil yourself? Make sure your stash is on point. With the right caps and a fresh batch of Kobra spray cans, you’ll be the one adding the next layer to these legendary walls. We’ll be there during the jam with a stand full of sharply priced graffiti supplies, so we’ll see you there!
